When social meets digital: Why Europe's best partnerships start with a handshake

Picture two companies in the same city. One is a social enterprise that trains people far from the labour market — brilliant at impact, stretched thin on digital tools. The other is a tech startup with a great AI product — brilliant at technology, struggling to reach customers who would love what they build. They have never met. That missed meeting happens thousands of times a year across Europe, and it is exactly the gap the DIGISET project was created to close.

This week, we are doing something about it — twice. On Wednesday 29 July we host the DIGISET Collaboration Lab, a free online matchmaking event. And through the DIGISET Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), we are turning good conversations into lasting partnerships between social SMEs and digital/tech providers. Here is why you should be part of both.

What social SMEs gain from tech partners

For social economy organisations, a DIGISET partnership is a shortcut through the digital maze. Working alongside a technology provider means learning digital tools, AI and digital maturity directly from the people who build them — not from generic tutorials. It means access to affordable, adapted technology designed around your reality instead of enterprise price tags, and reduced dependency on big proprietary platforms that were never built with mission-driven organisations in mind. And it means honest guidance: a partner who can tell you which tool you actually need, and which you don't.

What tech providers gain from social SMEs

This is not a one-way street — far from it. Europe's social economy employs millions of people across the continent, and it is a market most technology companies have never managed to enter, because trust there is earned, not bought. A DIGISET partnership gives tech providers trusted access to that market, plus things no marketing budget can buy: real-world pilots and case studies with mission-driven users, honest product feedback from organisations that will tell you exactly what works and what doesn't, and genuine purpose and ESG credentials backed by real collaboration rather than a glossy report. You also get first access to a vetted European network of social economy organisations ready to collaborate.

Beyond the first project: Growing together

The most exciting partnerships don't stop at a pilot. Social and tech SMEs that team up through DIGISET can join collaborative projects and explore EU funding together — Horizon Europe, Digital Europe and Erasmus+ all reward exactly this kind of cross-sector consortium. DIGISET amplifies each partnership's success story through its official communication channels, so both organisations gain visibility across Europe. And the community doesn't end when the event does: our Discord server keeps the conversation going every day. Join it here: https://discord.gg/DzfrXtAc

A handshake, not a contract: How the MoU works

We designed the DIGISET MoU to be the easiest first step two organisations can take. It is a good-faith agreement — not legally binding, and it imposes no financial obligations. Any commercial arrangement, if you ever want one, would be a separate agreement entirely. What the MoU does is make the partnership real: DIGISET provides advisory, facilitation, coordination and visibility support, monitors progress, and showcases your collaboration through official channels — acknowledging both organisations. Signing takes minutes; the relationship can last years.  And, this MoU tells the EU Commission the usefulness of DIGISET!
